SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Fire officials say a blaze that damaged eight units in a Sprinfgioeld apartment building started when kids playing basketball inside knocked over a candle.

A fire department spokesman says the children knocked over the candle, setting the curtains alight, just after 7 p.m. on Sunday at 134 Mill St.

The unit where the fire started was destroyed, while seven other units sustained water and smoke damage.

The fire caused about $30,000 in damage.

The Red Cross responded to the scene to help about a dozen people who could not return to their units.

There were no reports of injuries.
