Fire department spokesman Kevin Cartwright says the blaze was placed under control at 1:15 p.m. Sunday.

The fire has led to the temporary closure of southbound Interstate 83, the city's main north-south artery. Fire trucks are stationed on the elevated highway and pouring water onto the building from above.

Plumes of smoke were visible for miles after the fire broke out around 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

The building appears to be largely vacant but has some offices inside. Cartwright says the fire has not damaged any nearby buildings in the Clipper Mill complex, which is home to numerous businesses.
