AZ Firefighters Tackle Firehouse Blaze
(AP) TUCSON, Ariz.
Six firefighters escaped injury after a fire broke out in their station just north of Tucson while they slept.
Golder Ranch Fire Chief John Fink says one of firefighters was awakened by a banging sound on the wall about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday. Investigating, Fink says the firefighter found the communication room engulfed in flames.
He awoke his colleagues, who got out safely and then managed to get the ambulance and fire engine out of the building.
Fink says the firefighters, with the help of other crews, controlled the fire in about 30 minutes.
He estimated damage at $500,000 and said the station would have to be rebuilt.
Fink said the building didn't have a sprinkler system, but that the department recently had received a grant and planned to retrofit the station.
