(AP) ATLANTA

An Atlanta firefighter was in the hospital after being injured in a freak accident while battling a brush fire along Interstate 285.

Debris hit the firefighter in the head and pelvis when a passing tanker truck blew a tire around 9:30 p.m. Friday night.

The firefighter's name has not been released. Frankie Smith, a nursing supervisor at Grady Memorial Hospital said the firefighter was in critical but stable condition Saturday.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident.
