Investigators said a deadly fire Saturday in Wayne County was deliberately set. Now they have arrested a woman hurt in the fire and charged her with homicide.
State police said Timothy Wood did not make it out of the home near Honesdale alive.
Police arrested Susan Bates who also lived in the house and charged her with arson and criminal homicide.
A friend placed flowers on the steps of the burned home near Honesdale where investigators said Tim Wood lost his life.
"Just here paying my respects," said Glen Bothun. "It's different feelings, different emotions. Wish it didn't happen."
Tim Wood worked at the Wayne Independent newspaper for more than a decade.
Crews were called to his home on Canal Street in Texas Township just after 4 p.m. Saturday.
Firefighters said at first the flames were so intense they could not get into the home.
Investigators said Wood did not make it out.
Susan Bates, who also lived there, did get out and went to the hospital with burns, but then was arrested for arson and criminal homicide.
Neighbor Martin Plank said he heard Wood screaming for help from the back of the home.
"I know his brother was trying to get him from the other side, but we couldn't because the thing was a fireball. The flames went all the way up that tree behind, like a candle. It was just bad," said Plank.
People who knew Tim Wood and Susan Bates said they cannot believe what happened and were shocked to learn Susan was being charged with setting the fire that caused Tim's death.
"Just a nice guy who died last night," added Plank.
"Seeing it, it hits worse. I don't know what went through her mind," said Ellen Millar of Honesdale.
Newswatch 16 talked to Bates back in 2008 at a vigil for a friend who, ironically, was murdered, a victim of domestic violence.
"Always called her Ms. Susie and if you needed a hug, she was right there for you and I just can't believe this. I kept hoping that it was a mistake, just shocked," added Ellen Millar.
"You never knew what was going on behind the scenes. Never knew until a disaster like this happens. It's awful, just heartbreaking," added Skip Millar.
Susan Bates is locked up without bail in the Wayne County jail.
