Arizona Citizens Gain Firefighting Experience in Fire Ops 101 Class

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. - A dozen people donned 50 pounds of gear, hauled hoses, rescued mannequins posed as victims and experienced real fire conditions in a class designed by the Lake Havasu Professional Firefighter Association.

Lake Havasu City Fire Chief Dennis Mueller says the citizens fire academy gives non-firefighters a brief glimpse of the world of firefighting.

The Fire Ops 101 course last month included a look at the emergencies firefighters respond to and why time so important.

The biggest hit with the citizens was the flashover chamber because it involved real fire.

Temperatures reach 1,200 degrees at the ceiling and 600 degrees in the lower area, where the participants stayed low to the floor.

Lake Havasu City Manager Charlie Cassens, who was in the class, called the chamber amazing and fascinating.
