My teenage son is considering a career as a fireman/emt, in his high school they offer a medical program beginning as a sophmore. once/if accepted into that program he will be dually enrolled with the local state college. can graduate high school and be a CNA or Home Health Care provider and have course credits towards college. We are thinking that this is a good base to start with...any thoughts? Also they are building a new firehouse in our neighborhood, so we thought we would check with them about volunteering...any thoughts?
I think getting him into some volly fire dept would be great for him, he'll get to see whats in store for him if he chooses to go fulltime or maybe he'll find out its not all what he thought it was going to be. Yes I'd get him to check out the local departments to see if they offer an explorer group.
Hi Kim,
It sounds like a great program at his high school. If he is interested in firefighting and/or emergency medical services have him go to talk to the guys at the local fire department, have him talk to chief if possible and see if they have a junior firefighter position of a fire explorer program through the boy scouts. If you can't get any information at the fire department, try contactining your local boy scouts of america regarding any fire related explorer post in the area, or another place to try is your local office of emergency management, this is usually under county government. Some colleges also have programs where he can go for fire science degrees and sometimes they have programs setup with local fire departments where they room at the firehouse and respond to calls when not in class. Hope this all helps. Good luck to him hope he injoys his career in emegency services. Captain Kevin C. Ross Pembroke, NY Fire Department
Thank you for your response! After reading everyone's suggestions above, my son went to the local fire house this afternoon, he said that they were nice and suggested that on Monday he contact their secretary as they were unaware of any programs. So for now we will hold out till Monday and hopefully there will be some opportunity for him.
Thanks to everyone for taking the time to response to my questions.
