BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Nearly a dozen families are without a home in the Town of Cuba.

A photo shows the frightening scene in the early-morning hours when flames engulfed the Cubana Apartments, in the Allegany County Town of Cuba.

Firefighters say 11 of the 12 apartments were occupied. Fortunately everyone managed to get out safely.

Fire victim Theresa Rhodes said, "We went outside. The windows were out. The flames were shooting out the window."

When first responders arrived, they knew they had they're hands full.

Cuba Fire Department First Assistant Chief Dave Hardman said, "Probably 50 percent of the third floor was fully involved. Already broke through the roof. Tried an interior attack. Got a little hot. Had to pull people back out."

It took some time before firefighters could get it under control. They say the third floor is completely destroyed. The first and second have significant smoke and water damage.

Hardman said, "Long hard fire, got a lot of guys from neighboring departments in here helping us and we'll be here a long time doing overhaul."

Kathleen Clark, a loved one of a fire victim, said, "The families in this apartment complex lost everything they had."

The Red Cross brought those families in need to the Cuba Fire Department to offer assistance.

Red Cross Volunteer Thomas Wilson said, "They have motels and other people have places they'll stay and we'll give them a card so we can give them food and clothing."

Clark said, "If anyone can help by donating to the Red Cross to help the families that would be greatly appreciated."

The number to call to donate to the Red Cross in the southern tier is 585-593-1531.
