The fateful date of March 25 would be the focus of yet another New York City fire in 1990, this one at E. Tremont Ave & Southern Blvd The fire at E. Tremont Ave & Southern Blvd. in the Bronx was the site of the Happyland Social club where 87 club attendees died in an incendiary fire. The Citywide Tour Commander for the Happy Land Social Club was Asst. Chief Dan Nastro. Soon thereafter a “Hammer” team was created with FD&PD to crack down on these illegal clubs. NIST conducted an excellent technical analysis of the fire and can be found at this link http://fire.nist.gov/bfrlpubs/fire92/PDF/f92041.pdf
New York’s Steve Spak who visually documents fires in the city provides his view of Happyland Social Club at http://www.stevespak.com/happyland.html
What has your community done, and what is it doing daily, to prevent a repetition of this type of tragedy in your area?
