I may get slammed by many who misunderstand this post. I don't care! We lost a brother in Chicago and we don't know all the circumstances, we may never know. Certainly I am not blaming a brother that is not my point. My point goes back to a thread I  posted about routine fires. The media again used the words a coimmon fire, fought routunely. I heard some respond that nothing is routine and others that they respond to many fires and are well versed in the tactics they use. I have respect for all of those opinions just as I have respect fioe our fallen Chicago brother.

I will not sleep well tonight because I will go over and over our training to ensure I haven't missed some thing , but really it boils down to focus . No matter how often we have or have not performed a task without focus it can cost us . Rest in peace brother you have given all. I await your comments.

How the media reports a story is up to them.
Even if the job is done the same way, things can happen, but in this job, there will ALWAYS be a sense of danger and all the safety initiatives, PPE, training, classes, so on and on, will not eliminate all dangers associated with the job. Just because the media uses the term "routine" doesn't mean the FF's operating on the fireground went about things nonchalantly because they dealt with similar fires in the past.
No I realize that. I merely worry about how I as a training officer can influence my members to maintain their focus , and not believe their own press. We can't change the way others view us but I HOPE TO FIND A WAY TO INFLUENCE OUR BROTHERS. Sorry about the typo you're right it should be common.
Do it like I do. I point out that our only LODD came from a call that originally was dispatched as an automatic fire alarm. You aren't going to reach everybody, you can only hope as a training officer or senior member that the information you are giving reaches one.
Thank you for your replies, I just find it so hard to see brothers who may die needlessly. I compare it to a receiver who drops the easy pass in football, because he's looking for the extra yards on the run. Except he goes back to the huddle to try again, We may die because we were looking ahead past the easy task we have to complete, and the loss of any brother always bothers me.
