CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - There will be a smaller memorial for the nine firefighters who lost their lives in the Sofa Super Store fire two years ago.

In addition to families and firefighters, Tuesday's night time memorial will also allow the public to visit the Savannah Highway site where the men died.

Last year, the memorial held on the one year anniversary at the Gaillard Auditorium was attended by 1,500 people including local and state dignitaries.

This year's memorial will take place at the Sofa Super Store site. A tent has been set up for families and firefighters, who will have private time between 6 and 7 p.m.

At 7 p.m., Charleston Fire Chief Thomas Carr will read the names of the nine fallen firefighters. A bell will ring each time a name is read, said Mark Ruppel, a spokesman for the department.

Bagpipes will follow the reading of the names and then the public will be allowed to walk around and pay their respects at the different spots where the bodies of the men were found.

"We feel it's very important and the families agree that it's time that we really include the public and the surrounding fire department because they have played such a part of the tragedy," Ruppel said.

The site will remain open for the public until 10 p.m.
