WASILLA, Alaska - State fire officials say an elite crew that had been called out to a blaze near Fairbanks has returned to find their property vandalized.
Fire management officer Norm McDonald says the crew known as the Pioneer Peak Hotshots returned Tuesday to Wasilla and discovered vandals had broken into their headquarters and damaged or stolen their personal belongings, including vehicles.
McDonald says the room was trashed and that firefighters' lockers had been broken into. Among the personal property taken were iPods and cameras, and also professional equipment like pumps and chainsaws.
Five personal cars were also stolen, and 20 others were damaged or vandalized.
The group had been away for two weeks fighting the wildfire.
