DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. - Dauphin Island's volunteer fire chief is hospitalized with injuries incurred in a blaze that destroyed four houses.

Authorities say Brad Cox, who is also a Mobile Fire-Rescue fire medic, was taken to the University of South Alabama Medical Center and was treated for second-degree burns on his upper body and smoke inhalation from the fire Monday night.

Two other firefighters, whose names were not released, were taken to Infirmary West to be treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Steve Holmes, a spokesman for the Alabama State Fire Marshal's office, says the fire began when a resident built a fire inside his wood-burning fireplace, and winds caused it to spread. ___
