Should a persons age be a facture in determining if they can or cannot perform certain tasks for the fire department?  What about a persons weight?  Or should it be if you can perform your task performances in the allotted time no matter how old you are or how much you weigh?  I have been reading a discussion (and participating in it) where if you are older you are more stubborn, and over confident in your abilities.  What about those who are younger fresh out of school and academy should that same comment apply to them?

I get it and I understand.  Where I live it would take a paid engine at least 20 minutes going code to get to my house.  We are all trained to do everything just some of us are better at certain tasks than others.

This is not a hobby for me or the other guys at my station, but at the same time this is not a career for us either.  We all have demanding day jobs.  When we go on calls we are working, but after we get back we all go home to our wives and our husbands and go back to our daily life.  I take what I do very seriously and with pride in my work.  I also know that when certain people arrive on scene who I would trust to do certain tasks and who I would be uncertain about.

We are not troglodytes.  We do not sit around drink beer, tell jokes, play pool.  We are all trained to perform our duties to the best of our abilites.  What if a firefighter was injured, would you still have him do everything, or would you assign him to tasks that he could perform?  Would you tell him until you are 100% you can not do anything for this department.

Patti...look at his profile....pretty much sums it up

when you hit that "certain age" you have to take 1/2 tab of viagara every night at bedtime......Keeps you from rolling out of bed......

Figures.

Hehehe....  Doesn't work for women.....

ya hit the nail on the head!

volunteer service is service that qualified and trainable people should fill, not someones high school buddy. and for the older ones to hang around at 70 just hoggin a spot for an up and coming firefighter is selfish.

if i go in a structure and my partner and i get trapped, the two outside should be able to get us out. how do you define the 2 in 2 out rule when theirs people not willing or able to do so outside?

the only reason our type of departments get alot of flack is because of some towns have that "good ol boy policy".

where a paid department can get gaurenteed traind staff, we are resposible for getting traind or trainable staff that will do it for free.

its hard but thats where " its what we got to work with" is our only hope.

maybe local departments can offer their time and work with their local VFD's to help form a better traind department instead of critisizing them.

I attend every class, every refresher course, every meeting and drill.

and unless your at work, all should do it to in the VFD service.

also i must state that with no offence to the older FF's that have served so bravely over the years i mean you no dissrespect, but a consultant or trainer position should be considerd and let some fresh meat in..

Great idea.  I to attend every class/drill/refresher course that I can just so that my knowledge stays fresh.  I also sit down with seasoned firefighters and ask questions and review incidents.  How else am I to learn if I am truly doing something correctly or foolishly.  We may not go on calls very often but when we do I want to know I can perform at whatever level is assigned.

Paul - ROTFLMAO x's 100 - there is a kick-stand joke in there somewhere

and not true Patty, his 1/2 viagra pill does keep me from falling out of bed

HEHEHE......  LMAOIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't necessarily think that age should be a consideration, but NFPA 1500 outlines a good map for departments to build criteria to determine what health standards should be taken into consideration. I do feel that physical agility tests and fitness exams are a good idea for entry. It may be a little more difficult in the volunteer sector, but it can be done. Combine that with good health monitoring by EMS before and after an incident and you can succeed at mainting a fit department.

If you can do the job, you can do the job.

Damn, and you said you wouldn't tell........
