Looking to see if anyone out here is a AFGE Union firefighter that can help me get a better handle on our union. I have now been with the AFGE for about a year, previously IAFF, after coming to a new base. I can never say a negative word against the IAFF and especially VP Jimmy Johnson. The knowledge and advise that was giving helped with so many issues, but now I want to see the AFGE can get as strong a backing with the support  as the IAFF had.

I found alittle over a month ago that the AFGE has a Fire Council whom is there to support the firefigter, but it needs alot of help. The president of the council seems to know the laws very well and has been there for many, many question I have thrown at her, but I believe that we can make it strong. There is no place for us to retrieve information about contract issue, SOP changes with departments, ways that issues were handled (win or lose), and just  a place to contact each other for that information we might need, but could not find.

So here we go, lets start this off with a BANG and get the AFGE Fire Council moving in a direction that benefits us now and for those that follow.

Thanks,

JD

What does AFGE stand for (name)?
I have never heard of the AFGE. I wonder how large they are and how much pull they have legislatively. I am interested in finding out. I do know one thing...Organizations like the IAFF are only as strong as their members!
Guys,
Thanks for reading my discussion and asking more about the union. AFGE stands for American Federation of Government Employees and is actually larger than the IAFF. The issue with the AFGE are they take care of most of the other government agencies. Unlike the IAFF putting their attention on firefighters and now some EMS, the AFGE represents post workers, most of the department of's (ex...labor, energy, and commerce). Our membership is actually, per website, is around 600,000. With that in mind, we have the size and the ear of Congress and Senate, but we need to bring them more up to date with firefighters needs and not just put the weight on the shoulders of the IAFF.
If you'd like to know more go to, www.AFGE.org, and everything you could want to know is there.
Thanks again for you questions,
JD
Then I stand corrected. I was thinking that it was just for firefighters, hence my misunderstanding. I will check it out!
Having been a member of AFGE and IAFF, AFGE was 1992 and 4 years prior. I will offer this advise, unless things have changed alot and thats possible in 18 years. AFGE can stir the pot in favor of FF's or other Fed. employees but unless your in violation of an OSHA or other Federal regulation you probably wont get much from Government, considering thats who your grieviance is against. Good Luck
