I am a newbie and our vollie dept needs some help. I talked to my chief and want to apply for a 2009 AFG grant. Our rescue/brush truck is an 1978 chevy 1 ton that is a POS and needs replaced. ANY and all bits of advice would be greatly helpful to me in my "virgin" attempt to procure funding. Thank you and good luck to you all.
maker sure you fill everything out exactly lilike they ask and write a killer narrative and pray lots. There are also grant writers that may be able to help you.
Big factors are call volume, age of vehicle and firefighter safety. Download the guidelines from the FEMA site, get a DUNS number and be honest. Call their toll free number if you have questions and also use the site to find out who your state FEMA/DHS rep they prove to be valueable in answering questions.
Good luck to ya, and remember just last year a high school kid in PA got his town a grant for an engine, it was his boyscouts eagle project.
definitely what they said. especially the guidelines. Vehicle acquisitions are the hardest to get so you have to be able to justify it by call volumes and either adding a new capability or replacing a real piece of junk that is unsafe and doesn't meet NFPA requirements. Brush trucks are going to be extra hard unless you have a severe brush danger that threatens lots of homes/business or critical infrastructure. Be sure you have properly trained firefighters to staff it. That is even more important this year . Also be sure you cover why you can't purchase it on your own. Don't let me discourage you , after all it is just time and it could be worth free money. And go for a reasonably priced unit , keeping the costs real
If you don't think you can justify this properly you might look at a mini pumper or other engine so you can save dept funds for the brush. NFPA 1901 engines may carry a higher priority even if its is an Initial attack unit
We recived a grant ro purchase a new engine in 2005. WE have since made it our rescue truck also for the other one is unrealiable. However it is big heavy and not 4X4 so still have to take the old beater out for this type of sit. Thanks to all who have responded and yes I would love to have the boy scouts name and # also. Sounds like he will make a great lawyer or politician some day. LOL
Here's part of the article: GEISTOWN, Pa. — Joshua Chilcote in many ways is just your typical 14-year-old teenager. He attends high school where he runs track and plays soccer. He also listens to his iPod, talks on his cell phone and plays video games just like every other kid his age. But unlike most of his peers, Joshua has accomplished something quite extraordinary —winning an AFG for a brand new fire engine.
