I went through our Engine's adapters and stumbled across a 2 1/2 National Standard to a 2 Stortz. I have never seen us use this and wonder if anyone else has these and if they use them. We have both the male and female threads.
Are you sure it's not a 2.5 inch Storz? Two of my old volly departments used those as tanker quick-fill adapters. They rode with the female NSTs exposed. Once the fill site engine made the fill hose hookups the first time, the Storz adapters were disconnected, leaving the adapters on the hose at the fill site.
When additional tankers showed up at the fill site, their adapters were just clicked off and stored in a milk crate until afte the fire, then the adapters were placed back on the tankers quick-fill pipes.

I did a quick search of these adapters, and it seems overwhelmingly from what I've found is that they are indeed meant for use during tanker shuttle operations. I'm sorry, water tender operations.
When I was in a department that had a need for mobile water supply operations, it was so long ago that there was no such thing as a tender on the west side of the Atlantic Ocean. With all due respect to Captain Busy, tankers were hauling water around the east coast for decades before the 30 or so water hauling aircraft existed on the west coast.
