Watching the preparations for the Ground Zero dedication on TV this morning, I was struck by the clear visual representations of several important things:

The waterfalls - literal holes in the ground - in the footprints of the old WTC 1 and WTC 2 sites are a metaphor for the loss, dispair and uncertainty that affected so many Americans on 9/11/01 and for so long after.

The visual of Presidents Obama and Bush walking and talking together shows me that we CAN overcome our differences for things that are really important.

The partially completed new WTC 1 tower shows us two other important things - it may take a while, but we can build a new future, no matter what is done by those that hate us, and most importantly, WE HAVE UNFINISHED BUSINESS.

"9/11 will become a monument. But 9/11 has already become yet another powerful metaphor for the infinite stupidity of human beings, the infinite willingness to destroy. And 9/11 has become yet another metaphor of the infinite capacity of human beings to resist the worst humanity has to offer. Firefighters are that second metaphor. Every single day. Before, during, and after 9/11, they faced and face stupidity and destruction and do something to stop it, day after day after day."
