I was wondering what does everyone do when they get a called when they our at work and our close to there district.
I usually respond from work for 2nd alarm or 2nd dispatch from work when I can. Then what ever time I miss because of call I have to make it up with in two weeks.
Here is what I do. I stay at work. Because no money means you pay no bills. No matter 1st, 2nd, or 3rd alarms.
I missed some big fires, but I look at it this way. There will be more calls to come that I'll go on.

I WORK FOR A PAID AMBULANCE SERVICE SO I CANT GO.I LISTEN TO THEM AND WISH I WAS THERE.
well i can't leave work because its too far but if we get a rockin barn or house fire or anything big for that reason i am able to leave i don't get paid but nothing goes against me either other wise our response time for our department is 3 to 5 min 3 in the city and 5 out of town
I've never heard of being able to leave a job to respond on a fire call but I guess other areas are different. The only person in my department that was ever able to leave his job was our 2nd assistant chief and that was because he worked for the borough in the maintance department. The fire chief had to explain to the borough and town council that there would not be EMS coverage or hardly any normal coverage in the town if he didn't respond because most of our members work out of town. So then he was able to respond to calls.
One thing I have heard of is if you are on a call and are scheduled to go into work, the chief will call your place of employment and explain to them that you responded to a call and that you would be in as soon as you finished. They try to steer clear of this but usually they only do it if they're stuck on a working structure fire or serious accident.
Hope this helps you in answering your question...
I drive as well, my turnouts go with me if I am within responding radius I'm there truck and trailer. It makes for good traffic control. As for others jobs I've had they know from the get go I'm a FF and if the tones drop on a major incident I'm gone. I've had fairly good responses from the employers but then there are some that are only about the money.
im in a small dept in a small town. i don drive a but i do work for a small ma and pa bar. well used to be ma and pa till pa died in a vehicle fire 5 yrs ago so theyre all about me leavin. they drive my ass
I miss a lot while at work, but I work for a private service (Casino) and they get fined heavily if I come in late or leave early. I'm trying for a raise though cause I found out the other day that I'm worth $2500 dollars if I don't come to work, I told the boss I'd be there every day early with a smile if they would share part of what they save by me being there.
I work and live in a small town so some of the time I am able to leave work to go on a call. There are times however when I have to call into work late because I was on a call. Most of the time my boss doesn't mind, as long as I’m not late everyday.

I work for a Ditch Witch dealer, and my bosses husband is on the department. If it's bad enough he calls and ask if I can leave.
