It has been a struggle at times, getting a call, and there you are with your children and no0one around to sit with them. What are you to do? Luckily my oldest is 13 and youngest 8. I have had to take them with me a few times. We have a set of rules when this happens. They are pretty good about obeying them. Unbelievably it's true, ha ha ha. Who knows, they might decide to carry on the tradition that I myself am doing...

well there has been times when I have taken my oldest to a call (I see him more frequently then my youngest) He is 14 so he chills at the station while I am on a call
I will admit that my 6 year old has been going to calls with me his entire life....when he was younger, I would only assist on calls, and never be fully involved, then when he got older, and could understand more, he would stay in the truck until someone came for him..he knows all the rules about safety ( I know i sound like a bad parent) But I can assure you that his safety is never overlooked, and his whereabouts are always known to everyone on the fire. He often will tag along with the logistics person or sit with the EMT's until a sitter shows up. The fortunate thing for me has been that I knew a lot of people around town, so at almost every call, there was someone I knew and trusted. If things were too out of control, I would stay with my son, and offer support around the edges. He always impresses people with his knowledge of the equipment and operations...lol One day he could be a really good firefighter if he should choose to do so.! He is proud of what I do, and that carries me a long way...but it is hard, I won't lie about that, it can be very hard...
