I just purchased a used New Yorker in natural leather and I want to refinish it. I've painted numerous helmets. How ever Cairns will not release what they use on their natural leather helmets. I am guessing a water based shellac. Has anyone refinished thier helmet if so what did you use and how well did it work out?

Hey Guys!

I used the citri-strip also. Go to Kelly Moore, get a water based/latex primer sealer, that bonds to leather wood etc, and can be top coated with oil based paint. Do 3 coats, sand between each coat. Then use an oil based paint. 3 coats minimum, sand between all coats, don't sand last coat obviously. Use a new brush for each coat of latex and each coat of oil...especially the oil..very easy to contaminate so use a small amount of paint in a little dixie cup, and through the left overs away afetr each coat. Let each coat (especially the oil based) dry for 1 week between coats. Its hard to wait, but it will be worth it!

Have fun!

Don't send it back to the manuf! A few guys I work with did this with helmets there dad's got them..The manuf removed the paint by sand/bead blasting and blew out the threads/stitching...basically destroyed the helmets.
