What is your prefered nozzle--smooth bore or fog
My opinion is that both have their place ,but, i prefer tha smooth bore
I have used them both and it just seems to me that the sb nozzle is easier to manuver in an interior attack because of the slight pressure difference.
Although, on the first in line your adrinline takes care of manuverability for you, but, as the call goes on I tend to tire less while using the sb.

We use both as well have some new dual action the thing we are having issues with is went to inch and half hose and new type of hose and it Kinks no matter the pressure you run...

Never used a smooth bore on a hand line. All of our engines have SM30 fog nozzles on them. Less pressure same gpm. You can put out the same gpm with a 1 3/4" hoseline as you can get with a 2 1/2" hoseline with them. We do carry smooth bores on the engines but usually they're used on our deck guns.

I like the pistol grip straight bore (task force tips) but most times I am on the knob its with a combination task force tip. Either will do the job, the smooth bore has better range capability. Combination is good, because I am a bigtime user of hydrolic ventilation

I like combi for hand lines (1 3/4) and SB on any thing higher, thow we have 2 black widows for deck guns and Im imprest with the work they due.

Sandy a straight stream still comes from a fog nozzle.
Smooth bores are used for distances and piercing through walls and such, we try to go for property conservation as much as possible, the only smooth bore nozzle we have is on our portable monitor, as far as everything else its all fog nozzles. not to mention, smoothbores tire you out faster and most of the time requires more man/women power.

Smooth, fog it's one of those discussions over a few beers next thing there is a fist fight. It all comes down to personal preffrence. But if you want a very good general attack line you got to go play find out what works for you. I know from experince you can get the gpm's, reach, and about the same nozzel reaction comparing 50psi sb to fog. Once again its preffrence but its nice if you get in the oh shit situation and have wide fog pattern to push it back. also it depends on what your looking for flow, nozzel reaction, reach, simplicity.
THE BIGEST thing is to go play you would be suprised how many departmenst by me didn't have a clue they wern't getting the flow they wanted with what they had.
As far as being tired thats all in the nozzle reaction if your comparing a 50psi sb to a 100psi fog its going to be different. Also what psi you have to run to get the flow, hose dose not like to move bend or otherwise when under high presure. Changing from 100psi fog to 50psi fog helps out alot.
side note not all hose is not the same one 1 3/4 could flow more water then another AGAIN go play get the stuff dirty use it abuse it I wouldn't buy from a salsmen who wouldn't let you.

stlfd uses adjustable fog...and so did I when I was urban structural...(in the "hood'') in north st. louis ( i recently transfered to the airport and arff)...but when i was back in the city in the hood I was on a busy first in company and I always tightened the stream as much as I could to limit steam production and being steemed. I know some really smart guy is going to tell me the merits of fog and indirect firefighting...but my personal opinion is the less steam the better when doing interior offencive attack and thus would like trying the fdny way of using sb's on interior attack.
