We have been trying to prepare for a new ISO rating. This will be something new for me. I will be attending the fire academy for a three day course on preparing for ISO. Has anyone gone through a ISO rating? And what kind of experince it was. I would like to try and prepare for it the best I can. I know going through the course will help a lot but experince is the best thing.
George:
Recordkeeping is HUGE with ISO. Training, maintenance, pump tests are all very significant.
Equipment. A word of advice here is.. Do NOT "borrow" anything from your neighbors. If you don't have it, either buy it or take the hit. A department was recently cited and fined for borrowing equipment to improve their ISO. A follow up audit found the indiscretion. Don't risk it; it is not worth it.
Lost of hose. That's all I can say.
Hydrants and flow tests.
Dispatch is 10%.
Member numbers at training, meetings and calls will be looked at closely.
Good luck. Yes; the class will help.

Thanks for the info. Wont have to worry about the borrying part, the chief wouldnt even consider doing that. for a small town we are pretty well equiped and we have almost more equipment than we have storage space. I do the record keeping for the fire department so that will lie on me to make sure its enough and right i guess. I am in a unique positon because i have many hats. I am a city alderman, city fireman and 911 dispatcher for same city. so i have insight into all the aspects. probably one of the reason the chief wanted me to be the one to take the class.
I have just gotten in from Bell Buckle where the class was held. My head is spinning with all the information I have gotten. I had two pages of just I need to be changing and doing it this way rather than this way kind of stuff. But it was overall a very good and enlightning experince. Met alot of great people and came away with so many ideas. I might when i get settled down post in a blog some of the ideas, forms etc so any one else can benefit. If anyone out there is going through the process I still would be interested in any feed back they might have.
