Some of you may not be aware of it, but we have an Urban Search and Rescue Group here on FirefighterNation. We are getting a few members, but some of you may just be interested in checking it out from the educational aspect.

For everyone's interest, though, I am including a link to the State Urban Search and Rescue Alliance (SUSAR) at www.susar.org so you can learn more about this initiative, which is picking up some serious momentum. In fact, we got our letter of incorporation back recently and in November, Florida is hosting our fifth conference, which has grown considerably since that first one in South Carolina back in July 2005.

There is no interest in excluding any US&R teams, because as we grow together, we gain more opportunities. Several state programs that are federalized are also members. One of our goals is to educate teams to adopt the proposed NIMS typing recommendations for SAR; your team could be a NIMS-compliant Type 1 US&R Task Force like ours, or a 14-person Type 2 Collapse Rescue Team, or whatever you see you can meet.

SUSAR is for anyone who is interested in networking about US&R, sharing information including procedures, etc., and we also share training openings.

For example, if SC-TF1 has several openings in an upcoming Technical Search Specialist course, we will open it up to any SUSAR member team to fill it for our cost. This fills classes, maximizes the opportunities to get into courses (especially if your team would struggle to fill an entire class itself), and gets these people around the country to see what other teams are doing.

Right now we have around 41 states and Puerto Rico represented. Not every state has the "official" US&R authority on board and some states don't have an organized state program. But you can get information on how to help build a response asset between local and federalized response, you can learn about different things going on with the industry that you don't always get to hear, and you get to meet people with really interesting ideas.

Right now we are working on "individual" memberships, but anyone is invited to check out the website, and if you have a team that is working toward becoming a response asset in your state, get with your state US&R coordinator to get included, or if you don't have one of those (and some states don't), contact us and we'll see about bringing you in.

Come check us out on both of those links and see what all the excitement is all about.
