And now for some concluding remarks about response safety:
Whenever possible, drivers should place apparatus in such a position as to avoid backing.
Before backing operations begin, a spotter shall be put in place near the rear of the vehicle, safely positioned so as to be seen by the driver at all times.
If at any time the driver loses sight of the spotter, the apparatus shall be stopped immediately until the spotter is visible again.
Members riding in the apparatus cab shall exit the cab and perform the function of spotter unless other personnel are available.
If traveling alone, or if conditions exist that make use of spotters impossible, all drivers shall make a “circle of safety” inspection before backing up.
When apparatus is being backed in a roadway, the warning lights shall be activated.
