Why ask paid or unpaid??
I don't understand why we ask things like that or should women be on the fire ground. If we ask these questions then we must be going into it with a predetermined idea. I have been both a unpaid and paid professional fire fighter and I just want to say all my fellow fire fighters I don't care why you do what we do I am just saying thank you for doing it.

When you are a volunteer, how much time do you spend at the station....or on calls?

all depends....my department runs approx. 300 calls a year (w/no EMS). Calls could be from 15 min to hours.

I work for a paid department and there is a small town with in our county that has their own department with in their city limits. I know people that works in my department that's not half the firefighters from the volunteer department. I don't judge a person by the time they are at the station because I've recently got transferred to a slow station and we might average 6 call a week just on my shift. I spend 24 hrs every third day but I don't responed to as many calls now. Alot of volunteer departments have firefighters that also work as paid else where to so even if some one doesn't make many calls or spends alot of time at the station doesn't mean they don't have proper training to to the job well.

Well thats a different way to look at it.....I know most of our people are there every day....maybe a few minutes, maybe all day....Do you think that "time spent" at the firehouse makes a good firefighter...?? We also have full time jobs to deal with...So in my mind...if I/we can maintain full status as fully trained interior firefighters and keep a fulltime job that kind of tells me I am dedicated to what I am doing...I am there doing what we all do because I WANT TO DO IT....NOT because it is a job..Lets bury this issue....We are/or should be BROTHERS/SISTERS in our goal to "fight the beast"

Okay listen up ROOKIE I'm a volunteer for 17 years now and I'm getting real sick of hearing paid are better and you ignored my challenge before so I'll answer yours now. You want to haul out the balls and see who's better then figure out where and when and I'll show you that the only difference between paid and volunteer is the size of your brain. Now to all the other paid Fire Fighters out there I know that you all don't share the same ideas and I'm not attacking the paid departments. My uncle is a retired paid Fire Fighter and I don't care if your paid or not if you do the job because thats where your heart is. All true Fire Fighters do what we do not for money or glory, but there's something inside you that drives you to the very edge and gives you the boost to jump no matter what the outcome because ( paid or not, live or die ) theres nothing in the world like looking down the throat of the dragon and flipping him off before you slay him. Now back to Spanner, you issued the challenge and I accept so what do you say now.

It dose not matter if paid or unpaid we are a brothers and sisters in the fire service.

My company will respond 24/7/365 all volunteer and we even leave our families on Christmas nite (twice in the last few years). Rarely does our trucks take more than 3-5 minutes to start rolling out the doors any time of the day or nite.

last i knew,firefighters had to go to the same schools,,same classes.
and when i was asst.chief,,i was told there is no such thing as volunteer,,because of workmans comp laws.
in my eyes,,your a firefighter,,or you arent.
no different if your an on call dept,,or paid

What difference does it make a firefighter is a firefighter weather they get paid or volunteer. Same as if they are male or female, as long as don the gear and you have my rear your still a true brother.

I'm not attacking paid Firefighters just Firefighters that attack volunteers, they are the ones with the small brains. All I'm saying is that the paid firefighters out there that have never been a volunteer should not fight with the volunteers until they have walked in our shoes.
I know about applying for years for a paid position. I put apps in for 15 years and when I finally found a department that had a spot open that I could get The law got me by saying I was to old, seems the government thinks after 35 years old you can't fight fires anymore and not worth hiring but I'm working with some Congressmen to try and change that.
One last thing being a man or woman does not affect how big your balls are.

Stop and think a volunteer has in lot of way more training then a paid firefighter , because they bring there every day professions with them.
