A crash in Rockingham County killed a volunteer firefighter Tuesday morning, authorities said.
Paul Ellington, who had served for 17 years with the Oregon Hill Volunteer Fire Department, was on his way to a mobile home fire when he lost control of his vehicle, struck a group of trees and went down an embankment.
Authorities said Ellington was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident and speed played a role in that crash.
"We are a very close knit department," said Oregon Hill Fire Chief Dwain Strader. "And each of these people that are here -- they're a part of the fire department family."

Very sad and another example of speed and lack of seat belt leading to the loss of a brother.

How many more have to die before everyone gets it through their thick skulls that SEATBELTS SAVE LIVES.
All those futile deaths, so senseless, and so many families ripped apart because Joe Firefighter was in too much of a hurry, or too macho, or too stupid to wear his seatbelt (and hey, I'm an equal opportunity nagger--call it Suzy Firefighter not wearing HER seatbelt if you prefer).
I just don't get it, I really don't. How many stories have to make the news before emergency services personnel realize that they could be reading their own future obituary if they continue to disregard seatbelt usage????? What is it? Is it considered "uncool" to want to wear safety gear? Well the hell with it then, why not just run into a structure fire in bare feet and street clothes with a plant mister for a water source. It all amounts to the same thing in the end, doesn't it?
Jesus, it's so STUPID and senseless.
