Tornadoes can happen any time day or night at any given season but are most likely known during early spring and early summer, however there is a secondary tornado that the SPC has studied out and it certainly have lived up to its reputation and that is the month were the climate remains warm and the gulf is open for business and then potent cold air moves in. That is the month of November. From Spring through early summer dozens of tornadoes on an average of 122 a year has jumped significantly during the fall on November. So how do tornadoes start? well first you got moisture from the gulf coast and then you have allot of very warm and humid sticky air, with all this in place it helps set the stage, then you have your warm front that makes the air unstable and causes the air to rise, then you have your cold front pushed along the wind conveyor belt known as the jetstream coupled with daytime heating this will cause the air to rise more and more in the thunderstorm then you have fast moving winds in trophesphere then you have your southwest strong winds in the lower atmosphere, winds at the surface could be blowing 30+ or more while the winds inside the upper part of the levels is blowing at 100mph+ or more, this is known as wind Shere which is winds turning within height of the thunderstorm. With these fast moving winds this will change direction in speed and what this means is this will cause the storm to tilt and rotate. As the storm continues to rotate it will form a wall cloud, this is typically seen in the rain free base and its a lowering cloud kinda like a cats tail seen in the sky or an elephant trunk watch for rotation and see how long the wall cloud lasts, if the wall cloud continues to form and then you see a snake or funnel like cloud take shape then you have a funnel cloud
Funnel Cloud= A violent rotating column of air intact from the thunderstorm base but not to the ground. If you spot this, this means a tornado birth is getting ready to happen, once the funnel has formed and there is strong rotation visible then you will see dust or debris being picked up from the ground, when you have this, you have yourself a tornado
Tornado= A violent rotating column of air intact from the thunderstorm base to the ground with winds that could reach 300 MPH or more and can do some serious destruction.
Here are some Different levels of Tornadoes known on the Enhanced fajitu Scale
E-F0= 70=90 MPH. Some damage is done
EF= 1= 90=100 MPH
EF=2 100-120 MPH
EF=3 120=175 MPH
EF=4 175-220 MPH
EF=5 Known as the Finger of God can be as big as a mile wide and really clean the house off of its foundation known as the Killer tornado. There is incredible Damage.
If Severe weather is possible in your area the next day or so then the storms prediction will issue a convective outlook indicating a slight to high risk for severe weather. As the day draws near and severe weather ingredience comes together then a tornado Watch will be issued. This is a pentagram box that streaches for miles and miles and can issued for one or two states at a time. And the watch lasts no longer than 6 hours or more given the approachment of the severe weather. If severe weather develops rapidly and a tornado is spotted then the National Weather Service will upgrade the area to a warning.
If a tornado is spotted act quickly, go to the lowest part of your home such as a basement or interior room if no basement is available then go to a bath tub with a mattress over your heads, if outside and or driving never try to outrun a tornado go to a ditch. Do not get under an overpass, this is dangerous and the winds could easily suck you out from under. Lie flat in a ditch with your hands protecting your head, put four walls between you and the tornado if in a building. Have an emergency kit with you and a flashlight just incase the power goes out. If your in wood shaded areas these features can be hard to see. If you hear it coming it may be too late but if you feel threatened and you need to take shelter than do so quickly. Listen to NOAA all hazards radio for updates on the storm, and listen to the fellow fire departments and police officers as well as they put their effort and time and helping the public out. Do not try bothering opening your windows you are wasting your time.
