Where to START?!
Okay, so I just graduated High School in June, and becoming a Paramedic is something I've always had an interest in. I've looked online, and everything I've found seems to be the same. Get an EMT-B license. But how? I've been told to go through the Red Cross and take the CPR/AED/First Aid classes, which I plan to sign up for, but do you get any sort of certification for those? But then what?
As far as schooling goes, what school around the San Diego area offer the classes I would need? I've looked into Southwestern, but that is for people who already have the EMT-B license and have been in the field... unless I'm not looking deep enough.
Anyone who's gone through, or is currently going through this, can you help me out?
I'm almost totally clueless here, and this seems like a friendly place to start! :)

Look into any of the local community colleges under course category of Health. Here our local community college offers the EMT Course and you look under the Health section. Good luck and be safe...

The San Jacinto program is supposed to be pretty good. I work at a doctor's office and one of our patient's is the EMT instructor over there.

If you're affiliated with a F.D. usually they will put you through EMT school, otherwise try your local community college.

This was taken from the County web page. It is probably dated. I don't believe that grossmont ROP still does EMT. You may also want to try calling AMR. As the largest ambulance provider in San Diego, I'm sure they would be able to direct you in the right direction.

Hello There,
I am inquiring about info on Emt-b and Emt-technician schools. I was recently in Arizona and am a Canadian. I looked into one community college to see when the Emt-b was offered. I was on a fire dept. in 2001 and was in a serious incident. Its taken me a while to get to where I am now however I am ready to get back into the swing of things and try to get back on a fire dept anywhere fairly warm. I am wondering if anyone could tell me where my best options would be to take the Emt-b and Emt technician and how long it would take to complete this course. I do have my NFPA level 1 and 2 Firefighter. And one year of my Paramedic schooloing up here.. however I cannot get back into the program up here as it is oversubscribed. I am near Toronto right now and am trying to find out the best possible schools I should look into. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I thank you very kindly for taking your time to read this and get back to me.

Sean, First off, I totally agree with Damnthings' response in regard to you not doing your own homework on this one. Sure, it's easy to click off words on the computer, and it sure isn't a lot of effort on your part to do so. I don't want to berate you for asking the question because you are just graduating from high school but am puzzled why you would not actually GO TO A FIRE STATION AND TALK FACE TO FACE WITH A REAL LIVE FIREFIGHTER PARAMEDIC...
If you are truly motivated to do this job, not taking the time to ask these questions to the folks in your local area is absurd. You are lucky that folks like Jay took the time to outline for you where to go, but why on earth would you not take the initiative to do this yourself? The fire service needs leaders, not followers.
This may not be the right career for you buddy. While you are asking people to do your homework, the next gal or guy has already visited the local fire stations, talked to the local ambulance provider, done ride a longs and maybe ever made contact with the local EMSA to get the details and requirements for accreditation to work as a medic.

Try this...call a local department and ask them....or you can go to your county/state EMS department and ask them....Most State/ Community Colleges offer the courses but if you are a member of a Department they pick up the tab...it isn't cheap...I think here in NY a EMT-B class is arount $700.00..Might try Vollie unit then go for the training....Paul
