Does your department wear commendation bars (ribbons) on their Class A uniforms? I have been doing some research and have found a couple departments that do and they have different ribbons? What does your department use and what do they represent? Thanks

people began to want them for "routine" things........if you start handing out awards for BS, they wont mean anything

Absolutely.
This was a similar case for us, there was a handful of people who did have a couple ribbons, but then there was a lot of complaints about who was getting awards. In many cases, the crew was awarded the same commendation even though it was the efforts of only a couple guys. For instance a crew could make a significant save and the engineer at the pump panel would be recognized with the same award. It was because of issues like this that there were no awards given out for some time, despite some commendable acts.

A few years ago the program was restarted, especially after our LODD, but now a reviewing committee comprised of all ranks will review the citation and acts and it is down to the person performing the acts and is for significant acts.

anyone who chases medals is gonna get themselves or someome around them killed

Absolutely, and for what? Some fruit salad on your chest so you can tell some stories? Doesn't make sense either.
