Depends on the nature of the tattoo I suppose. Clearly I'm biased, but I have a reasonable understanding for those who think tattoos are distasteful or inappropriate. Showing tattoos that promote hatred, violence, racism or sexism is probably not in the agencies best interest, but who can make that call on what's to be accepted or denied?
Coming from someone who's been spit on to see if my tattoos rub off or not, I'd say who gives a shit - show them. If 'they' have a problem, they can save their own lives.
This has been discussed many times before here on FFN. LAFD for example now employs a swim test for firefighter candidates. It's not about the swimming but instead to reveal any tattoos. If you have a tattoo, forget getting hired on the West Coast. I don't believe the same standards apply for east coast departments, specially volunteer departments where these standards don't apply. And for those agencies that do allow tattoos, they cannot reflect something that a reasonable person would find offensive...

I think tattoo are cool and I want to get one somegay soon, just dont know of what yet, but I must say that this is my opinion only but I dont like tattoos that cant be hidden by a short sleeve shirt, or a pair of pants.
I don't see the major issue with tattoo's so long as they are done tastefully and out of view while in uniform. Department policy is department policy plain and simple. I have 2 tattoo's, (one of which is on my photos on my page) and before getting them one thing I did consider was the locations and my uniform. Be smart when getting one, it could affect your career later on down the line.
I got a tattoo a couple of years ago...But it is nothing distasteful nor is it offensive, I never thought I would...but I did...I did it because I am very proud of what I do....It is hid by a short sleeve shirt....its a maltese cross with the scramble and "Fire" "Rescue" printed in the top and bottom sections...the cross is surrounded by flames...I don't see that it makes me less of a Firefighter or medic to have it....so as far as I am concerned....its really none of anyones business....Just my 2 cents worth on the subject....Stay safe Brothers/Sisters Remember to keep the faith.......Paul
I don't have a problem with tats - visible in uniform or not, as long as they are not offensive, gang-related, or promoting illegal activity.
Restricting people with tats from the fire service is counter-productive. We have enougn problems getting qualified candidate pools. Eliminating good candidates just because they have tats is just plain silly.
What's next - eliminating candidates because of their race, gender, religion, or ethnicity? Those restrictions are silly, counterproductive, and illegal. Tat restrictions currently meet the first two, and who knows, eventually they meet the last one.
And...I'm a chief officer that does not have any tatoos.
Tattoos are a reflection of personal belief and the uniform is a reflection of professional belief. A tattoo, if you have one, should not conflict with the uniform and should be hidden. The public could get confused. If you are a candidate and have a tattoo, be prepared during the selection process, it's your first impression towards those who are considering hiring you regardless of any tattoo policy. Good luck to all candidates and god bless you for willingness to serve. TCSS
I personally don't have any tats... But I would not summarily dismiss a candidate solely based on a tattoo(s) unless they promote violence, drug use, gang affiliation or some other illegal activity.
I am under the opinion that tattoo's are ok. If tastefully done. That is not to say that You cannot do whatever you want, but I personally have 2 now and will be getting more. But I also make sure that my tattoo's are able to be hidden while wearing a t-shirt or uniform shirt. The only exception to my little rule is the dates on my OIF 3 Tattoo. They are able to be seen just so slightly when I am wearing a T-shirt. other than that I keep it hidden. But then again this is a subject that has been and will be again debated to no end. No matter what I or anyone else say's there will always be somebody else that say's we are wrong. But I have put in my two cents, so thats enough of my opinion's.
This is taken from the current policy. The PD now does not allow tattoos to be visible while in uniform. This means some officers are required to wear long sleeve shirts even when it's over 100 degrees.
3. Tattoos
a. Tattoos shall be in good taste and not violate the EEO policy.
No tatts on me either. I share your thoughts on not judging someone with tasteful ones. Not everyone shares those thoughts, so to the candidates--- be prepared. TCSS
