FLWFD- Do you mean 24 on 72 off?
We are still doing 2/2 and 4 but we are trying to negotiate a 24 hour shift schedule. It is different though. It would be 24 on 24 off, 24 on, 5 days off.
They 24/72 (1 on - 3 off) or the other example I gave requires 4 shifts, it averages to be 42 hours a week, on an 8 week cycle. Some weeks more, some weeks less than what they pay you.
Our chief is very hesitant as he knows with the new schedule we will all be out of town or working another fulltime job with 5 off. They rely heavily on OT callback for station coverage.
I know some federal fire departments that have switched to that shift. From what i was told most guys like it. More time home and less sick leave abuse. The squedule rotates so your not always working with the same group of guys. I know local F25 was looking into it. I will try to get you the other locals that are already doing it
I haven't run that schedule in this service, but I did in the Navy. My detachment worked 2/3 schedule when not deployed. It worked out great. I am hoping to use that schedule when we expand here in our little county FD.(right now it is the chief and I full time.) It's a little hard to do with just 2 peeps. So I'm a 7-4 5 days a week. I can't wait for us to bring on more personnel. Be safe and learn something new today.
