Is anyone else having a large-scale outbreak of mrsa and vre in their area? How long ago did it become a major topic of safety in your area? What other precautions(if any) other than your ppe are you taking or think we should be taking?
On a personal note I dealt with an MRSA infection to my rt hand back in march, and I will tell you that this is something that you don't want to get, it hurts like hell and if untreated it can kill. Stay safe out there. Chris W. ERCVFD
I actually know a girl that just found out she had MRSA. She started out with this bumps all over her body and she thought it was an allergic reaction to some vitamins she started taking, so she got an injection for it but they got worse. They actually looked liked shingles or pimples. So the next day she came to work, her one eye looked like someone punched her bad! It was barely open, so her doctor ran some labs and found out she had MRSA. Now she's at home recovering but she's very depressed about it. What's crazy about it is the day before she found out about it, we were learning about MRSA in my EMT-B class.
hey Chris
I had MRSA two years ago. It put me in ICU for 11 days. I had it on my upper leg. It went from nothing to almost killing me in just 3 day. On the thrid day it hit my bloodstream. I have to say it does hurt like hell.
I am also of the opinion that those who have worked in the hospital or pre-hospital environment are walking around with it. It is just a matter of time when it actually presents itself. They isolate patients while in the hospital, and then release them w/o those necessary precautions to others around them. The infection probably hasn't left them and they get released to the public to continue to spread it around. I believe that is why we are finding it more and more. Especially in the high schools and colleges.
