Many believe that a fire truck should be RED.
Why?
Why is red the magic color?
How was it chosen as the color of the fire service?
Are there colors out there that have been proven to be more visible?

So, this discussion begs the question:
If YOU could choose the color for your fire engine, what color would it be?
AND, if you had a mascot that you could put on the side, what would be your mascot?
Go!
TCSS.
Art
Red body, black cap on cab, eg. Chicago FD.

Big White stripe down the body...strait, no silly zig-zags.

Corpus Christi Hooks mascot on the back door.
Got a PICTURE?
Ted wants to see a picture.

White trucks are more visible unless it is snowing.
Sorry to burst all you sissy's bubble out there, but Red has been the color resembling the Fire Service for decades. Why change it now because some flower loving guy decided to make trucks look pretty, F that. A fire Truck looks best when it's red, white, black or a combination. Put some elbow grease into cleaning your rig and have pride in it and the color red will stand out the best. But don't mess with Tradition
Personally, I'm partial to WHITE with a BLUE stripe and lots of CHROME!

Check out Chuck Grow's webpage for lots of Fire appasratus pics from all over Southern California, some of the Southwest.

When I first got on my Department in 1994 we had white over yellow rigs. In 1997 when we had our centennial and bought a new Quint, we changed to black over red, (we are a suburb of Chicago after all). The surrounding Depts. had various color rigs from slime lime to white over red. Now it seems like every Dept. around us has changed to black over red. Stay safe!
Ok, now how do I put this correctly to be politically correct....? Ah, yes...POUND ROCK SALT IN YOUR BUTT...!!! Hey, its not the color of the apparatus but the knowledge in how to use it most efficiently....Maybe you have been too busy making it pretty to realize that....Don't ever make comments about another Companies truck colors...traditions are very important and it so happens that one of ours is that our trucks are YELLOW...That's right YELLOW...and we can put out fires too...even without RED......Hell "red" is also the color of lights that hookers use too....Must be another traditon I guess......Stay safe............Paul
Every Company or Department has their traditions, and that's great. I think rig colors are a matter of opinion and have nothing to do with the qualifications of the firefighters working in or on them! Just my 2 cents. Stay safe!
Hello I have been in the fire service for a little over 8 years and I have seen many different colors of fire apparatus yellow, blue, red and even an off green shade but yes red seems to be the most common.
My department once had a tanker that was lime green, as far as how visible it was and how it worked out for the department is beyond me and before my time.
And as for how red became the color for emergency vehicles as far as firefighting goes I don't know but they look good!
know exactly what your talking about we bought a truck from a local company that was yellow, it just went out last week to get painted red and matching the paint with the rest of our trucks took alot of work. trying to get ahold of paint colors from 4guys and changing them to match what the trucks look like now
