I was talking to another member today and she mentioned this to me, so I went to Jon's page and this is posted there: At 2:05am on January 1st, 2008, JON WILLIAMS said…
HI TO ALL OF JONS FRIENDS. IT SADDENS ME TO INFORM YOU ALL OF HIS DEATH.HE DIED IN A HOUSE FIRE TRYING TO SAVE A CHILDS LIFE.IT'S STILL UNCLEAR TO WHAT HAPPENED BUT I'LL LET YOU ALL KNOW MORE AS I KNOW MORE
I would sure like to know more, but it saddens me that I had the honor and pleasure of exchanging ideas with Jon and before I could get to know him well, he has died in the line of duty.
My heart goes out to his family, friends, his fire department and his community.
It is a tragic loss.

that just taught me a good lesson about checking the profiles that I "ok" a little more carefully. Some days I barely look at them and just click on "accept".
And yet, I am still sitting here thinking how crappy I will feel if this is, in fact, an LODD.
I mean; "died while trying to save a child at a housefire"? It would be on Fox News, CNN, MSNBC. It would at least be in the crawler across the TV screen.
Come to think of it; I am outraged that this isn't news.

Right on, Art. I felt pretty crappy this morning when I read that post by... Jon Williams? Same all-caps, no spacing after the period, just the same as earlier posts. Too much new years' cheer perhaps? I hate to appear suspicious but as you said this HAD to have made the news somewhere.
Dave:
It's a heck of a way to spend your time after reaching such a milestone in your website's young history.
Congratulations on the milestone and thanks a lot for the exhaustive attention that you are giving this matter.

Well, on tomorrow's Internet TV morning show, I'll now have to talk about yet another person who attempted to tug on the heart strings, but yet created a hoax. On the plus side though, I can easily point out that the operator of this site went to great lengths to verify this information. Not many site operators do this anymore.
Of course we don't have 100% confirmation to say that this is TRUE or FALSE.
Either way, I'll have some words tomorrow morning at 9AM ET. Watch on my page here at Firefighternation.com. We'll take your phone calls live if you want to comment.
Yes, it may have been. But....its also an interesting challenge.
Back in my Firehouse.com days we had a young teenager who was super active on the forums, saying she was starting to write a book about firefighters. Then one day she stopped posting, and a few days after that someone came on under her profile and said it was her parents, and that she had been killed in a car accident.
After a little homework, I somehow tracked down her home #, and her mother was a little surprised to find out her daughter had been killed.
I'd be very surprised if there was a LODD at this point, but can't close that out for sure. There are all sorts of reasons folks do these kinds of things and often they don't realize how easy it can be to track them down, especially in cases like this where essentially they are claiming someone was killed and law enforcement could get involved. If there is no real JON WILLIAMS, the person who did this is probably wise to fess up before that were to happen.
