Hey yall
Id like to use this forum to talk about Firefighter innovations.. tips and tricks of the trade with the intent that Our hints and such will save a Brother or Sisters or Civillians Life.. HOOAH.. Ill start the thread with the same tool I been hollering about for almost a month now the FUBAR by Stanley tools... Man this has turned out to be a 34 dollar insurance policy.. its great for everything!!! although.. there are a few modifications that need to be done for example.. The rubber handle has a tendancy to melt in high heat situations so I took it to My buddys Body shop and had some high heat resin put in the rubbers place.. also I used some of his shop tools to widen the Rectangular hole in the fork so I could use the tool to turn off gas lines and such.. If You hold Your tounge just right and if Your in a pinch the opposite end could in fact be used as a Spanner wrench but be very careful as Youll smack Your knuckles on the pavement if you dont do it just right.. The best part about the FUBAR is it could easily get You untrapped and is pretty light and managable in tight confined spaces..
Another thing.. As Firemen at one point in Our lives We have had a Garrity light strapped to Our Helmet the things put out some light but now Garrity has came out with an LED Version of this light and let Me tell ya folks its a handy and bright little sucker.. and the best part of all .. As an LED Light it lasts longer as well..
There is one more thing that I carry in My pocket and thats a Gerber Multi Tool and a good pocket knife.. You never know when Your going to need one..
My Father always used to say its better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it..

Don't know if this will help but a few tricks i have picked up in the few years as a firefighter involve SCBA's. The first one is when changing a bottle on Scotts 2.2 and 4.5's and the pack is on the firefighter, a little trick i learned to beable to change them at 3am in the dark at 30 below is as follows; To turn the tank off remember that off has two f's as does firefighter. therefore turn the valve towards the firefighter to shut the air off. When disconecting the high pressure hose from the tank, use the off method again. Turn the hose conector twords the firefighter to disconect. In order to reconect the high pressure hose to the tank turn towards yourself, you has one o on has one o. the same to turn the tank on. turn the valve towards you. Just something i picked up and taught myself. and i teach all my ff's at the station this trick and they all seem to pick up on it quickly. Another trick i have learned is on controlled breathing to conserve air. I often resite my ABC's in my head and breath on every vowel. If i get worked up and find my self "sucking air" really fast breathing. i stop and put this method in to affect. it gives me a chance to calm down and conserve air. i don't know if this goes in to the theme of this blog entry but anyway just some food for thought. it all seems silly but it works. In the fireservice some of the silly stuff is what works and is still used today.

This is a good topic, I found a lot of good tips like the one mentioned, by Jon, in a book I ordered recently. I have no personal interest in the book but it comes in handy for a few reasons. Thus is the only reason I am giving it a mention. The title is "Volunteer Training Drills" Written by Howard A. Chatterton.
From my own personal experiances, I found a good way to get a better seal with the Scott 2.2 and 4.5 air masks, is after you tighten the 4 straps take your hands and push the mesh back towards the back of your neck then tighten the straps again! This works very well, if you have high cheekbones.

Whats up Yall its been a long time for Me .. But I have another equipment review.. The United States Army Designed Tanker boot by Matterhorn Shoe Company .. This would make a great station boot or a perfect wildlander boot Its made of durable leather has a Vibram sole and is flame resistant to temps as high as 500 Degrees F.. Its great if Your in a muddy situation and have to get out of Your boot due to its strap that buckles at the top.. It comes in Black and Desert Tan.. Google it up Yall!!

Love the FUBAR myself. I've been carrying one on my utility strap on my bunker pants for a while now. I've also found it to aid in searching as an extension of your arm.

Has anyone heard about BLUE LED helmet lights? Local FF shop has them in stock on the theory (from the salesman) that the blue cuts through smoke better than white light... the shop was waiting to test them out in a smoke house (place is owned by firefighters) but they haven't been able to test it out yet.
Is this true? Or is the flashlight supplier blowing smoke? (pun intended)
