Im just curious on who you would vote for in your house a member who makes about 100 calls of 230 and who is there every monday who is at every fundraiser always washing the trucks or doing something at the fire house or the guy who shows up at elections and only made 26 calls with prior officer experiance i personally would vote for the first guy even though he has no officer experiance we all have to start somewhere right ?

Hi Jeremy, yes we all have to start some where, I to would vote for the first guy if he has the training including state, county, and department training to be an officer. Maybe what you need is some SOG for officers that would include what training is required to be an officer and how many calls, work details, standby's etc you must attend to be considered eligible to be an officer. Previous officer experience should not be the only reason that a person is voted into office. Someone could have been a Chief 10 years ago that does not make him Chief material today without continuous updated training and participation in day to day operation of the dept. As well as lack of previous experience as an office should never automatically put someone out of the position of becoming an officer.

Well, let's analyze this, shall we?
Your first guy made 43% of the calls, likes to hang out at the fire station and attend your fundraisers.
He likes to wash trucks, but he doesn't care to study anything that might lead to an officer's position.
He is there; therefore, he is.
Your second guy may have made 100% of the calls since he got on, possibly comes from another department with a buttload of officer experience and you're going to vote for the "good ole boy"?
Congratulations. You have just given new hope to the good ole boys.
we put in our bylaws that you have to have training and so many years in the department and make a set percentage of the calls to be eligible to run for an officers position
the first guy made most training hours for 3 years in a row including officer training and has done his home work on being an officer he was just pushed out by some other guy who plays mr.important WHEN he decides to show up
we have bylaws that say the same but they need to be updated the bylaws are from back when the department had 10 members and 1 truck with maybe 10 calls a year times have changed and so shouldnt the bylaws i dont feel you should beable to be officer unless you have made an effort and to me 26 calls isnt enough effort

It doesn't sound as if you can fix the problem until you fix the by-laws.
The by-laws would be the document of record if there was any legal action.
And the by-laws. Were the drafted, approved and adopted by the fire department AND your board of commissioners? If not, then they are worthless. In most states, boards do not give up their legal authority to administrate a fire department.
And a word of advice here: if you want to draft changes to the selection of officers/firefighters, it's best to have buy in from the bosses. Otherwise, it is an exercise in futility.
It doesn't sound as if you will get anything done this go around, but if you start now, you can avert a "next time".
