Going Independant
As many in Escambia County know, My fire dept...The Warrington Volunteer Fire Department....is makeing a run at going Independant from Escambia County by way of becomeing a Specialized Tax District. Altho I do not have ALL the reasons....here are a few just so you all at FF Nation know.
1. Our fire district produces over 1.2 million tax dollars for the fire service.
Our station only sees about 235,000 of that. Meanwhile, we sit here
with
a 20 yr. old ladder truck. If I am a tax payer in Warrington, and I find
out that all of my money is not going to protect ME and
MY community...I'd be highly upset! Especially knowing that my taxes
are going to buy a new fire truck for a dept. that runs 300 calls a year
and has decent trucks!(We run between 1200 and 1300 per yr).
2. There was a contract made up years ago between the stations and the
county. By this contract, everyone knew that we would end up haveing
career crews in the county. According to the contract, the career crews
were to be put into place to "supplement the volunteers." Well, since
the career crews came about, it has not been a supplemental thing, it
has been a hostile takeover. Now the career side is takeing notes on
mistakes, blasting the volunteers in the media (in a "professional" way,
of coarse), and doing everything they can to push volunteers out. We
were about 500 strong when this fiasco first started...now we have a
little over 300 volunteers. The funny thing is, alot of the career guys
were volunteers to start!
That is just two of many reasons we are wanting to become our own entity. The volunteers have been supporting Escambia County for over 50 years. We here at Warrington plan on keeping that going for MANY MANY years to come. We support Kentland VFD as they have done the same thing and are 100% volunteer.
