The Department of Sustainability and Environment employs over 500 Project Firefighters (PFFs) for several months full-time every fire season. These PFFs complement permanent staff of approximately 1300 trained firefighters across the state in wildfire suppression and prevention works such as prescribed burning.

PFFs fall into 3 categories:

firefighters (including operators)
hover exit crews
rappel crews.

All firefighters are adequately trained prior to being involved in operations.
