In my Explorer post in Hilton most Explorers have pagers. We are allowed to report to the scene of brush fires, house fires, and automatic alarms. Are main job at fires is to change air pack S.C.B.A. bottles for the firefighters, and at brush fires we get to use fire extinguishers, brooms, shovels, and what ever we have on the trucks. Without pagers we have no way of knowing that there is a call. We also have key fobs to get into the fire hall.
Personally if the junior does not have it on during school if its not ok and the junior does not do any thing against the department bylaws then I tink it is ok
I am a explorer and I carry a Motorola Minitor 3 pager. I see nothing wrong about carrying pagers. As long there are rules in place. Like one of ours is not to carry the fire radio or pager to school. I see nothin wrong as long there are rules.
I am involved with Exploring in our area. Our Fire company has had an Explorer post fo 6 years now. All of our Explorers are issued pagers, and full turnout gear. The reason they have the pagers is the guideline set down by Learning for Life. They state that Explorers are not on call firefighters & may only be activated as a post, not individualy. So, once the pagers are activated, the post is considered activated, not just individuals. Our Explorers assist on scenes and are a very big asset. They have been the best recruitment tool we have ever found. They also have their own officers, such as Chief, Asst. Chief, and Captain. In order to be an officer, they must attend and pass the junior fire school at the Cape May County Fire training Academy.
I feel that allowing Explorers to respond to calls helps them in many ways, one is seeing how a fire ground is opperated and another is that it keeps interest in the program. I feel with the proper guidelines and training Explorers should be issued a pager. I know from personal experience that it would have stunk if I couldn't have responed to calls, because I am the type of person who learns by doing something over and over. Shure you can train hard but, you can never get good unless you applie it to a situation and learn from your mistakes.
