I have also heard that keeping the deadfall and scrub bruned off on a regular basis helps prevent small fires from becoming truly massive.
Fire in forest is bad! I understand that periodic controlled burns are necessary for the growth of the forest, but I sometimes think they're too dangerous. Up here in Illinois we've got prairie grass that the forest preserve folks occasionally burn. Sometimes they get out of hand and then the surrounding towns' brush trucks have to come out and help the forest preserve rangers control their "controlled burn".
