EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. - Authorities in East St. Louis are trying to figure out what caused a fire that killed a 6-year-old boy.

East St. Louis Fire Chief Jason Blackmon says the child died in a fire that broke out in an apartment Tuesday night.

Blackmon tells the Belleville News-Democrat that the boy's mother and her 4-year-old child managed to get out of the fire safely.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal's office is investigating.
