Hey guys, I'm brand new to the site, and to firefighting. I'm 18 years old and just joined my local fire department as a volunteer in North Carolina. My department is pretty small (only about 10 calls a week). Anyway, I am pretty excited and eager to start fighting fires. Obviously I need to go through quite a bit of training, including the 1403 training so I can get into live burns, which I am pretty eager to do. Are there any other volunteers out there who have completed their 1403 training? I'm wondering how long it will take me to complete these ten classes, and what classes I should take first. I'm already signed up to do my PPE class, I'm just wondering what comes next, and how long until I can get into a fire. Thanks guys!

Best idea would be talk to the guys on your department that have gone through the training and see what they suggest.

Personally I dont know what the 1403 consists of but PPE, SCBA, knots, and ladders would probably be some of the first classes to try and take.

Tom ,slow down there is more to  fighting fires then just what you will learn in these classes . Your  attitude is commendable and enthusiasim  is a neccesry attribute but  you have lots of time you are just beginning the adventure. There is no replacement for experience! Find one of the experienced members and ask that he mentor you, then stick to him like glue he will prevent you from getting in  over your  head and you can ask him all the questions that will pop up. Welcome to the fire service you have years of thrills ahead , train hard and listen closely and let time be your allie and you will love your choice to serve.
