Ok there is a big debate in my dept over switching from the 1044 to the 660 Now no-one except a few people are happy with this. I would like to get peoples experiences with both of them as well as any facts people might have to prove one is "safer" or "better" then the other.

Thanks,

Let me put this delicately.......You have 1 year in and are concerned over what bucket you put over your head......NOT....Just put what they give you on strap it on tight and go to work....!!!! Get a "few" years under your belt...then you can compare and comment.......there are far more important issues facig us than what bucket they buy us....its OSHA/NFPA approved...? that's all you need to know.........(sorry about the rant...I get really tired of probies and Jrs. coming up with stuff like this)
don't get me wrong I understand where you are coming from and (its been 2 years now) anyway when the guys who have been on for 17 yrs plus see the same issue I do we are al trying to find facts to resolve this issue. gear is a big issue on our dept. and It is my life at risk everybuilding I walk into so I want to be using the safest stuff available...

I dont care if youve done this job for 6months or 30 years you share the same risk as everyone else when you cross the threshold into a building.
if these hemets are both OSHA and NFPA approved then there isn't a "safer" helmet....the key here is to wear it and wear it properly......if you are that anal retentive about being safe then maybe you should stay at the door.......
hollllly the guy simply asked for input guys! From what i gathered he wanted to know is does anyone know of pros and cons of the two buckets and you guys just tell him to shut up and do the job and stay at the door if he doesn't trust the bucket he's got on.If one is better than the other(because I personally couldn't answer that) and he and his other fellow firefighters can have a say that with some knowledgable pro's and cons and tell his officers or whoever does the ordering about them than a good decision can be made. What if FF31 had 20 yrs. experience would you have replied the same way?
Mike the powers that be don't always do what needs to be done. The powers that be sometimes just flip the price tag over and see what the smaller Number is and make thier decision basic solely on that and like everything on the planet there is high end and low end product and when your talkin about going in side a building and a 2X8 floor joist comes down and smacks you in the head is the 1044 or the 660 going to protect your melon better. This is what FF31 was asking not I think the 1044 looks alot cooler while I'm wearing it but they want to switch to the 660.
It's nice to see that your discriminatory remarks are across the board not just against volunteers it extends into the professional sector as well.By the way what is your criteria for deciding on who and who you don't like and who and who don't get respect.Paid/volunteer? 1 year, 10yrs, 20 yrs experience what is it just so everyone knows on here!!! Just to ask delicately :0)
exactly I really dont care about looks, We have our own "parade" helmets. I want myself ans my company to be the safest we can when going into a building. it does nobody any good if we switch to a helmet that isnt as good then what we already have.
My opinon:

Your department should have either someone knowledgeable or a designated committee to determine the best possible product(s). Given that all helmets must meet NFPA 1972 only those that clearly state that they are NFPA Compliant can even be considered. So long as the helmet meets the standards it is a choice of style, comfort, weight and price.

Style and comfort are very subjective and I would not want to rely on someone else's "opinion" but would want to make my own judgment. As for weight and price, totally quantifiable and objective, how much do you want to carry on your head and how much do you want to pay. Again, only your department can answer those questions.

To establish yourself as your department goto guy for helmet safety I would hope that you are well versed in NFPA 1972, all of the testing criteria, material strengths and weaknesses and full comparison analysis. (But if you are then you'd have no need of opinions in here)

Barring all the above, you're less than a knowledgeable shopper and are basing your decisions on the "opinions" of others whose knowledge base may exceed yours but may very well only be equal to or less than your own. As I pointed out earlier, it's your head, who are you going to trust: Anonymous strangers or reputable sources?
I knew you'd be here shortly jack.I think he's merely asking for opinions to take to the guy that does purchase the helmets and have him check it out and make a yes or no answer. Not just based on price but legitimate feed back that can be considered for making the purchase.
Richard,
Thanks for attempting to clarify FF31's position but I have read his post and all of the replies. I think I have a grasp on what he's looking for. Thing is, he (most likely) and you (clearly) seem to think that anonymous (and oftentimes uninformed/misinformed) opinions are valid enough to bring back to a department.

Moreover he himself stated that it had to do with safety, not style. So again, why would he (FF31) ask for "opinions" of fact rather than fact itself? Since his real question is not about style or comfort but about which helmet is safer/safest, manufacturer and independent testing data are what's needed to make the comparison. I don't believe that I've seen anyone offer that up here yet.

(FYI what do you call ..."legitimate feed back that can be considered...?" Opinions that define safety as "I think", "I prefer", "I have"?)

As to your comment(s) about Paul's comment(s); This really is a cheesy discussion. A young buck with no specific knowledge on helmets requests that everyone give him their "...experiences... as well as any facts (clearly facts are secondary) people might have to prove one is "safer" or "better" then the other." That is NOT how you go about collecting objective, quantifiable data for an informed purchase. It IS how you go about gaining points by starting discussions.
We recently Changed all helmets in our dept And bought invader664 with defender visor for everyone. Though at first the look wasn't pleasing me I got used to it. And the defender visor is a good thing as far as I used it. It slides inside so it's never in the way. It's closer to your eyes so it protects better and It never fogged. Be it used at 30celsius to minus 35 celsius. If you ask me it's the way to go...

that is more or less what I am looking for. I Want to hear expericenes and facts because in the real world the PPE purchaser cares as much about experiences as he does facts. Because if in the Lab helmet "A" is better than helmet "B" but in actual practice helmet "A" fails more... he would then say okay we go with helmet "B".
