Event Description

Since 1982, a grateful Nation has honored its fallen fire heroes during the annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend held in Emmitsburg, Maryland. This year's Memorial Weekend events will take place October 4-5, 2008

Families of fallen firefighters being honored this year and returning survivors will register at their hotels and attend a welcome reception on Friday evening.

Survivors of the fallen firefighters will participate in Family Day activities on Saturday on the National Fire Academy campus in Emmitsburg. An evening Candlelight Service at the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton will conclude the day.

On Sunday, honor guard units and bagpipers will open the Memorial Service with a procession honoring America's bravest and their families. The national tribute will conclude with the unveiling of plaques listing the names of the 2007 fallen heroes and others being honored who died in previous years.

There will be a FFN get-together taking place this weekend in Gettysburg, PA (15 Miles North of Emmitsburg). We can attend the services as a group. Anyone interested in attending, please let me know.

The Saturday and Sunday events are Department Dress Attire or "Dressy" clothes. I will post more as the time draws near. I am looking at lodging in the Gettysburg area for all of us that wish to attend. Also, That Friday night we will have an informal "meet and greet" session for the FFN members attending with a FFN party on Saturday. You may bring as many people as you would like.

It's amazing to work with the staff and survivors. The stories you hear will change your outlook on serving as a firefighter. I will be there again this year as a regular volunteer. Hopefully, I can meet up with you guys!

Comment by Bruce Mack on September 10, 2008 at 8:47pm: I have attended several times since my own department experienced a lodd in 2001. It will humble you and EVERY firefighter should attend at least once in thier career!! it is part of paying our respects to the brotherhood.

Comment by Robert Rewis on September 27, 2008 at 5:35pm: I am missing the event by one week. I am here right now for the Florida / Mississippi weekend NFA Classes. That relly sucks! I wish I had the time I could take off work I would stay the whole week for it. Maybe next year!
