POLICE have arrested and charged a man over the theft of equipment from a CFA crew earlier this week.

The theft was uncovered when the firefighters returned to their base at Pearcedale at 6am on Monday to find GPS units, a laptop and tools missing from their cars and the station.

The crew had just attended the scene of a fatal car crash in nearby Somerville on the Mornington Peninsula.

A 27-year-old Pearcedale man was charged yesterday with two counts of burglary, two counts of theft, two counts of theft from motor vehicle and obtain property by deception.

As if budget cuts and lack of funding isn't bad enough we have to deal with these rat bastards... Sheez... Glad the guy was caught. Nice beard on the CFA firefighter that has glowing hair?

CBz
Lutan, just a quick question on policy for you. As M ike says the firefighter with beard is a striking image but does the beard not get in the way of his breathing apparatus and constitute a fire hazard to himself on a fire scene. I'm guessing the SOPs differ in your area. I don't mean this disrespectfully just out of curiosity. As for the bastards that abuse the brothers when we are out serving others no punishment can be too severe .Maybe half an hour behind the station for some accident simulations would be inorder.Stay safe Lutan.
No one is forced to wear SCBA. In other words, if he doesn't want to because of his beard, then he doesn't have to.

It just means that come a job where it is needed (ie: interior, hazmat, etc) then he has to assume another role such as pump operator, OIC, etc.

Though when you look at it, I reckon that hair would make a pretty good particle filter!!!! And think of the hydration benefits with all the food stuck in there....
That's not true for most departments. Most don't let you have one period. Many larger departments also don't operate like that. In Washington, DC I can't just choose to stay outside. If you're a firefighter, you're going in. Drivers are a promotion and officers(also a promotion) go inside with the crew. The person in charge is a battalion chief which takes a solid 15-20 years to even be eligible for. If you show up with any facial hair here you're put on charges.
I'm not disagreeing with you Cap, I'm simply saying over here, it's not a requirement (for vols). For a career FF, then it is absolutely not allowed...

In many of the regional areas, they don't even carry SCBA on their trucks, which I think is even scarier!
From the many comments I've read here on FFN, there are many volunteer fire departments that have "exterior firefighters."

"So what do you do?"
"I'm a scuba diver."
"Really, that sounds pretty cool, and dangerous. So what do you do, as a scuba diver?"
"I manage the tanks on the boat."
"No, I mean when you dive, what do you do?"
"Oh, I don't dive. I always stay on the surface, on the boat."
"But you said you were a scuba diver?"
"I am, I just don't wear scuba gear and I don't go under water. Just because I don't go under water doesn't mean I'm not a scuba diver."
"Yes it does. How can you be a scuba diver if you don't wear scuba and go underwater?"
"I'm a surface scuba diver is all. Same job, I just do it from the boat."

Oh yeah...NOW I get it.
Have you seen USFS wild land firefighters Cap? Beards are VERY common. And after losing firefighters involved with interior firefighting, the decision was made to discontinue interior attacks as well as remove SCBA's from all the apparatus. They were no longer in the structure firefighting business.

Our USFS firefighters kind of do the same thing as our Aussie counterparts. You just can't compare your departments municipal standards and norms to a wildland based department. Apples and oranges.
It still seems to me that some kind of a protection such as atleast a nomex hood is called for. Hair lights off rather quickly and easily and the results can be rather severe , so not to cover up seems like a no brainer ,apples or oranges.
