As one of the billion users of Facebook I'm surprised at the under-utilization of it to promote safety and the fire service. of the 500 friends about 100 are fire related people. That means I have another 400 that aren't. I just posted something about checking heaters and getting CO alarms. Why, because the 400 poeple don't think about that. As a former firefighter it was my job to keep people safe. If one person reads that post and gets an alarm it might save a life. Last year I posted about getting kids involved in the fire service as something to do during the summer. Had  several poeple reply looking for fire companies not only in Delaware but in PA and TN.

I'm not patting myself on the back. Just illustrating that Facebook should be used to promote the fire service and safety procedures that can help people. It doesn't have to be the Fire Company FB page but each and every FF. Something once in a while so it does catch peoples eye.

Post something today about checking heaters and see how many responses you get.

I'll do that.I post stuff all the time and a couple of my friends have commented to me so I know they read it.Doing the best I can.
You bring up an excellent point JPC. If I was a young person, striving to get a career as a firefighter, I too would take advantage of Facebook to share things with my friends and the general public. Anyone not thinking that a prospective employer and the HR folks doing the background check, aren't going to punch your name up on Facebook to see what they can find out about you is just plain naive... What message are you giving people. Party animal or future professional firefighter... Your call.

JP Craig, excellent point
I created a Facebook page for my vollie dept. and try to post several things each week ie. fire safety, recall info, related stories, etc. I also add some pictures of training and calls when possible. I'm really trying to improve our public image and increase the knowledge of how and what a volunteer dept really is, As a whole I don't think most Volunteer depts. have done a great job of educating the public on how it works and what it takes to do it. Facebook, twitter etc. is an excellent and free way to do this
I am a proud Jr. FF

And I get my friends on facebook to understand the importance of Fire saftey
But, the thing about facebook is, people dont always read about posts, and ignore messages.
I still say a nie little speech in person makes everything easier.
Facebook itself is a place to relax and chat with friends, and if I bring up fire saftey or something babout saftey in general, they ignore the topic.

Even though I am a teen of this age, I don' text, use facebook much, or Im or what ever its called.
I believe speaking to someone directly gets your point across much better.

But you do have a point. Kids and Teens really should get into the fire service over the summer.
Its a great experince!
I am currently heading up an expansion for a private ambulance company and am in the process of hiring staff. And I did just as you said Mike....I pulled them up on facebook. AND , because of what I found out about them on facebook, I chose not even to interview them. Although the resumes were impressive and the credentials were there....the ones I looked at were young and their facebook showed them to be ignorant and into the booze all the time. Not the kind of staff I want to hire.
The paid department that I am on does not have a facebook page but my volunteer department does. It has lots of friends and they put out PSA's all the time.
Good Job!! I too have posted little reminders on facebook. Like "Change your batteries" and such.
This is one of the most powerful statements I have read to date on the FFN. I hope people read this and pay attention. Their future career(s) may depend on it.

Ah Craig check Johnson Township Fire on facebook. We use it and my little dept has quite a few fans for are population. You can even join are free to the public cpr class next month on there.
We recalled Craig' post while we were working on the news story of the latest fatal Ohio fire and the ugly trend.

Have any of you used Facebook to highlight fatal fires and share the various fire safety messages?
