Would you want your children to be firefighters?
Out of all the many careers choices, opportunities and rewarding experiences, would you want your son or daughter to become a firefighter?
Firefighting is one of the most self less jobs around. It takes loyalty and trust that is hard to find in any other career. If your son or daughter said that they wanted to be firefighters, would you say "Absolutely!"

My daughter already answered this question for me....She told me that she wants to become a veternarian and also be a Volunteer Firefighter......I didn't say much but my heart swelled up a bit....she is proud of her oldman trying to help where he can....When I became a certified Firefighter a few moons ago...LOL...She gave me a Saint Florian medal and asked me to wear it at the Firehouse to keep me safe......I have never taken it off....and believe me if she wants to do something she will and probably be better at it than I ever could..

Good afternoon Capt.
Look at it this way......Alot of us "oldtimers", not calling you old just in the business for awhile (I myself over 25 years) exposed ourselves unessesarilly. I wanted to be a member of the Leather Lung Club as much as the next guy and went into way to many structure fires without air.(Tough Guy/Stupid Guy) But like evolution, our mistakes/short comings have improved the system for the next generation of up and comers. Todays officers don't look the other way or consider it OK to go into a hazardous enviroment without SCBA, they drill it, preach it, and in some cases strong arm enforce it.
This is a good thing.....The only thing I guess I'm saying is I can only hope my sons learn from my mistakes, work a little smarter and safer. I don't have daughters so I can't say how I would feel, but I hope I would support a daughter like I do my sons if this is their true calling. I think you would too.
Another way to look at it, if it is truely their calling son or daughter and they want to do this firefighting life.........our support or not they're going to do it.
I understand what you mean about the health issues and the hazards, but you supporting them in their dream of a happy life is not wishing the negatives on them. I think we would hurt our kids more by not supporting or encouraging their careers choices....more so than any potential injury on the fire grounds.
We can guide them, teach them from our experiences and more so from the mistakes and stupid choices we made along the way....Then stand beside them in support of the choices they make.

If my son or daughter wanted to be a Firefighter.. I would ask are you willing to miss family gatherings , holidays birthdays? If you are than go for it. But remember the family functions I missed be cause of the JOB..The schooL, shows. the weekend games. But it's part of the JOB, and I think it's still the greatest job in the world, despite the drawbacks.

Yes, I would encourage my sons to become firefighters..I have and two of my three sons are...both FF level 1 and on son is level 2 and a LT in the FD.
They were part of our JR FF program and went thru the state jr ff cadet program
If your children grow up around the fire house, going to fd functions they are more than likely going to follow in your footsteps.

I am proud to say that my two son's are Firefighters. What ever your profession is, I can't think of a greater honor or legacy than to have your children follow in your footsteps.

I feel like John, I am proud of my kids and the professions they have chosen. If one of them wanted to be in the fire service my answer would be, Hell yes! Go for it!
By the way my son-in-law is a firefighter, so is my brother and my wifes first cousin. Oh yeah and me too 35 years and still loving it.
I am at work today, it is 12 hours into 24 and we have had 12 runs, including heroin OD, and a working fire. We threw a tire chain on the way to the fire, got stuck (23 inches of snow in the last 10 days) dug ourselves out and still got the backup lead. We have rebuilt our tire chains twice and had a spaghetti lunch together, what could be better!

I was raised into the Fire/EMS Service because my dad has been a Paramedic since I was born. I grew to love the job on my own from responding with him. In no way I was forced into it or encouraged by him. The older I got the more I learned & understood what it was all about. While in high school my friends where out partying & getting into trouble I was at the fire station running calls or training. I felt like I was making a difference in my community as well as my life, I still feel that way today. I love being apart of Emergency Services & are constantly trying to improve myself, my department & my community.
I don't have kids yet but one day when I do I hope they feel the same way as I did/do. However, they will be free to make their own decisions just as I was allowed to.

Yes I would love for my daughters to become Fire Fighters, I have 3 daughters, one is Married now and the other two are single and I am sure they would make as good a FF as some of the male FF I have seen in my career. And I had a long one 41 years in a career Paid Major City Fire Dept.

I insisted my son get his college degree BEFORE he considered following me. He did and is finishing fire academy this month and on to emt next! Now due to the economy, who knows if he'll get a job in any career path.
The answer is yes, I support his decision, but insist that he work differently than I, and many of us did, over our careers! SCBA's during overhaul, clean the PPEs, shower ASAP, reduce the cancer risks! (Yes, I am a cancer survivor!)
