WASHINGTON - A fire at a high-rise apartment building in northwest Washington has killed a man who jumped to escape the flames and critically injured three others, including a child.
D.C. fire department spokesman Pete Piringer says firefighters were called to the building on 16th Street between Lamont and Irving streets at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday.
Piringer says a 38-year-old man who jumped from the building has died. He says two people are listed in serious condition and another three are listed in critical condition, including a child.
Piringer says 125 people have been displaced and were given shelter at a nearby recreation center.
He says the fire appears to have begun in a common area on the 5th floor of the eight-story building.
The fire had closed a portion of 16th Street. The southbound lanes reopened at 7:30 a.m
