"Exercising" LDH
My department seems to think that we should do a "hose change" every 90 days on our 5" hose. I cant find anything in NFPA or even the hose maker to justify this. Just wondering what other departments do

Do you mean relaying the hose or replacing it?We strip our 4" off and relay it every so often but as long as it passes the hose test I don't think you need to replace it.

Every year at hose test time we take whatever is on the bottom and switch it to the top. I don't think there is a standard or anything for this. It can't hurt to rotate the hose and plus it gives you some practice in loading the hose or training probies.

We call it rotating. The LDH is pulled from the hose bed, and then reloaded in reverse order. It helps prevent breakdown of the rubber liner at the folds. It also give the guys something to do.
Check NFPA 1962 Standard for the Inspection, Care, and Use of Fire Hose, Couplings, and Nozzles and the Service Testing of Fire Hose 2008, Chapter 4.2.5 and 4.2.6. While it does not define "sufficient intervals", 90 to 180 days are about average with my department and others in my area.

I checked 1962 and all it says is "periodically". My thing with it is years ago it was needed more with woven jacket hose but technology has changed and the fire service unfortunately sometimes doesnt change with it. I am an engine company supervisor and understand sometimes there are things that need doing that may not be anything more than "busy work" but we are a busy dept and run a higher than average fire to ems call ratio and it seems that every 90 days is a little excessive. Thanks for the input

I agree with you to an extent and appreciate the input from someone that works more with hose than just fire dept. I saw where Angus(what we have) says it is formulated to withstand certain amounts of load time. We do test and reload once a year. I was just wondering with such a high call rate if 90 days is a little much. Thanks

If it is to relay the hose to change the position of the kinks in the hose in the end causing it to last longer. We relay the hose every 6 months, I am not sure if it is a NFPA standard but more of a keeping the hose longevity.

Now we use 4inch LDH . Esp when we do Hose tests.
Makes sense, I mean it is easier to test 4" hose and just leave the 5" on the rig :-)

No doubt the need is there. When you say ever so often what kind of time frame are you talking. No one is doubting the need, just the timing.

We do it once a year when we test our hose.....other than that it gets laid pretty regulalrly so it gets a "workout" all on its own.
I guess if your from a company of FD that doesnt lay out alot then I could see the benefit although 90 days seems a little much.
